Why “ALFA”

In the early days of the space race, NASA needed a way for its pilots to simulate the experience of precisely maneuvering a flight capsule while enduring tremendous amounts of gravitational force.

Described in Tom Wolfe’s The Right Stuff, this specially engineered platform was used by men such as John Glenn and Alan Shepard to push the limits of flight, eventually helping to put a man on the moon.

The module was known as ALFA.
